Fecal Profilesof Anaerobic Microflora of Large Bowel Cancer Patients and Patients with Nonhereditary Large Bowel Polyps1

چکیده
It has been postulatedthat the intestinal anaerobes play a role In the etiology of large bowel cancer. This study was designed to characterize and compare the fecab anaerobes of patients with large bowel cancer, patients wfth nonheredbtarylarge bowel pobyps, and healthy control subjects. Although some distributional variationsof the anaerobicgenerawere observedamong the studygroups, significantdifferencesin fecal anaero bic microflora and total aerobic counts were not noted. Thissuggeststhat taxonomicgroupingof fecal bacteriais an inadequate measure of relative risk of developing bargebowel cancer. However, the fecal microbialla-dc hydroxylaseand cholesteroldehydrogenaseactivitiesof large bowelcancer patientsand patientswith nonheredi tary large bowel polyps were significantlyhigher than those of healthycontrolsubjects. On the other hand, no significantdifference in fecabmicrobial/3-glucuronidase activitywas notedamongthe studygroups. It maybe that assessmentof the total metabolicactivitiesof the intes tinalmicroflorawillprovidea betterunderstandingof their potentialrole inthe genesisof largebowelcancer.

AN EASY SOLUTION FOR THE DIVERTING LOOP COLOSTOMY: OUR TECHNIQUE
ABSTRACT Background: The loop colostomy is one of the most popular techniques used as a protective maneuver for a distal anastomosis and/or temporary fecal diversion. We are introducing the use of a full thickness skin bridge under the large bowel instead of a glass rod which alleviates problems such as protrusion of the large bowel, retraction of the bowel into the abdomen after removing the ...

Background and Aim: The human bowel contains a large and dynamic bacterial population (more than 500 species of bacteria). Some intestinal bacteria such as Streptococcus bovis , Enterococcus and Bacteroides fragilis have previously been suggested to be implicated in the promotion of colon carcinogenesis probably through the conversion of mutagen metabolites. Materials and Methods: Thirty patie...
متن کاملAssociation between alcohol, dietary factors and subsites of colorectal cancer: an ecological study
Background: Colorectal cancer is the fourth most common cancer, in terms of incidence throughout the world. There are some differences for risk factors involved in the incidence of tumor in different anatomical subsites of large bowel. However, most investigations have not studied the association between dietary factors and colorectal cancer subsites. Thus the current ecological study inves...
متن کاملDiagnostic accuracy of fecal calprotectin in assessing the severity of inflammatory bowel disease: From laboratory to clinic
Background: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) involves chronic inflammation of the digestive tract. In the past decades, fecal calprotectin has been proposed as a useful biomarker for the differential diagnosis between IBD patients and healthy controls. We designed this study to evaluate the diagnostic ability of fecal calprotectin (FC) and conventional inflammatory markers in IBD patients. M...
متن کاملINFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE Gut-associated bacterial microbiota in paediatric patients with inflammatory bowel disease
Background: Clinical and experimental observations in animal models indicate that intestinal commensal bacteria are involved in the initiation and amplification of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). No paediatric reports are available on intestinal endogenous microflora in IBD. Aims: To investigate and characterise the predominant composition of the mucosa-associated intestinal microflora in col...
